Boater hats were originally worn by men in the 19th century and later adopted as a woman’s accessory. The evolution of the boater hat is the focus of “From the River to the Runway,” a multidisciplinary project by Cora Grant ’19 (engineering and theatre), Kelly Pien ’20 (economics), and Muriel Brunet ’17 (computer science). Using hats from the Smith Historic Clothing Collection with visual analytics by their adviser R. Jordan Crouser ’08, who is a visiting assistant professor in statistical and data sciences, the students examine how and why women made the boater hat their own over time and whether or not these vintage hats might be making a comeback in popularity.
