Save the Date: Cromwell Day is November 4, 2021
May 27, 2021
Dear students, staff and faculty,
Cromwell Day will be held on November 4, 2021. Our theme is “Collective Imagining of Antiracist Democracies: Fighting for Racial Justice.” This theme calls us to come together in order to design a better, more inclusive and equitable world. In addition, it enables us to build on the college’s Year on Democracies with a focus on our ongoing work, Toward Racial Justice.
We look forward to sharing news of our keynote speaker in the coming weeks.
Classes will be canceled on Cromwell Day so that students, staff and faculty can attend workshops, a plenary session and other activities devoted to celebrating the legacies of Otelia Cromwell (Class of 1900), Smith’s first Black graduate, and Adelaide Cromwell (Class of 1940), Smith’s first Black faculty member. Cromwell Day was founded in 1989 to provide dedicated space to learn about diversity, racism and inclusion.
We will begin the collective imagining of antiracist democracies by hosting conversations on June 18 as part of our Juneteenth programming. I invite you to sign up to participate in an optional conversation. Later in the summer, we will call for your artistic visions, which will be stitched together into a single digital quilt.
For now, please save the date. Graduates of the Class of 2021, congratulations! May everyone enjoy some well-deserved rest this summer.
Warmly,
Floyd Cheung
Vice President for Equity and Inclusion
