If you had to create a synonym for the word Smithie, what would it be?
If I had to create a synonym for the word Smithie I think the word “outstanding” would be it. Smithies are simply outstanding in everything they do, both in and outside the classroom, academically and personally. Whether it be reflected in their academic performance, a showcase of their talents, or their ever-present kindness and drive to do better, Smithies stand out because they always strive to be the best version of their whole selves.
What are you most looking forward to being on campus this fall?
What I’m most looking forward to being on campus in the fall is finally getting to experience Smith in its entirety: the experience of being on-campus with the entirety of the student body, faculty and staff, partaking in all of Smith’s infamous traditions, enjoying in-person learning with all of the rich academic, cultural and experiential opportunities the college has to offer. Without a doubt, I’m just excited to be able to finally see what Smith is authentically after a quite atypical semester last spring.
“Smithies stand out because they always strive to be the best version of their whole selves.”
If you could give a piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
You are valuable without needing to accomplish something “extraordinary.” Your mere will to exist in itself is “extraordinary,” everything else is an added bonus to your already amazing self.
What challenges or advantages do you have as an international student at Smith?
The advantages I have as an international student at Smith are the presence of a supportive international student community and the incredible support that the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) offers to students from all around the world—even before they set foot on campus. If you’re an incoming international student and have any doubts, questions or concerns you can always reach out to the ISSO, Dean of International Student Caitlin Szymkowicz (she’s the best!) or any international students (you can find us on Instagram @iso_smithcollege).
The challenges I've experienced as an international student are homesickness, culture shock and getting used to speaking English all the time! However, with time, things get easier and as I mentioned before, there are plenty of resources and an amazing international community that will help you and go through any struggle with you!
What do you think has been the most “Smithie” thing you’ve done in life so far?
The most “Smithie” thing I've done so far is definitely getting the famous “Smith Chop” a month into my first semester. Smithies refer to the “Smith Chop” to the recurring tendency for Smithies to cut/change/dye their hair dramatically at least once during their experience. Last semester, I cut my hair up to my jawline, it was an impulsive decision but I do not regret it at all.
