Global South Development Studies

The minor in the Global South Development Studies Program introduces students to the diverse analytical perspectives of the social science disciplines while ensuring they have a sustained familiarity with one geographical region.

With the exception of EAS 100, all courses for the minor are at the 200 or 300 level. Entering students might consider enrolling in introductory courses in the departments comprising the minor, courses such as ANT 130, ECO 150 and ECO 153, or some sections of the history colloquia.

Requirements

• One course from history
• One course from economics
• Four other courses from among the following five social science departments: anthropology, economics, government, history and sociology. Students may petition the program, through their minor adviser, for one of these four courses to be GSD404 Special Studies or to be from a discipline outside of the social sciences. Comparable courses at other colleges may be included with the consent of the minor adviser.
• Two of the courses in the minor must reflect a regional concentration on Africa, Asia, Latin America or the Middle East.
• The student can include no more than two courses from any department.
