Biography

Fraser Stables works in photography and video. His artwork uses conventions of documentary and performance to explore the contingency of meaning within images. Past projects have engaged a range of themes, including competition as a mode of performance, tattoos as expressions of identity and architecture as memorial. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan, and he was an artist-in-residence in the Core Program at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Stables’ artwork is represented by Georgia Scherman Projects in Toronto.

Stables is co-founder of Atopia Projects, an arts organization that initiates exhibitions and publications. Atopia Projects works internationally, collaborating with artists, curators, writers, galleries and museums. Past projects have considered topics such as amateur and discarded photographs, the use of theft by artists and the way in which modernist architecture may be reimagined through the uncertain relationship between personal and societal histories.

Stables currently teaches courses in analog and digital photography, digital media, interdisciplinary foundations and senior seminars. He is involved in several interdepartmental initiatives and programs, including Art and Technology, Design Thinking, Film Studies and the Museums Concentration.
