Experience a living tradition of intellectual rigor and scope. Take a risk on an untested concept. Develop the acuity to frame an argument, and the eloquence to persuade others of its merit. Take an art class even though your major is engineering. Work with a faculty of scholars who respect their students enough to expect the highest standards of academic achievement.
“I appreciate the little moments of joy throughout the new Neilson Library: Maya Lin’s original sculpture, the outdoor terrace, the sunken garden ... There’s so much to experience.”—Kathleen McCartney, president emerita
Smith College is transforming its teaching with writing-enriched and public discourse initiatives across the curriculum. This means Smith students are writing articles that are published in mainstream media and scholarly journals, on their own and in collaboration with faculty. They are in the lab doing hands-on research that’s published in scholarly journals. They are participating in public venues to make their voices heard. Smith students are taking action, getting engaged, speaking up, speaking out and getting their ideas out into the world.
