Pau Atela grew up in Mexico. He spent 1989–91 as an instructor at the University of Colorado in Boulder and took a sabbatical in spring 1995 at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at the University of California Berkeley.

Atela's interests include dynamical systems, Hamiltonian mechanics, chaos, computer visualization in mathematics and phyllotaxis.
