Naming of the Campus Center for Julia McWilliams Child '34

Letters to the Community
November 17, 2022

Dear students, staff and faculty,

Happy Julia Child Day.

Today is the perfect day to inform members of the Smith community that the trustees of Smith College have unanimously voted to name the Smith College Campus Center in honor of Julia McWilliams Child, class of 1934. Going forward, the Campus Center will be known as the Julia McWilliams Child ’34 Campus Center; early next year, signage of the new name will be installed.

This decision was made in recognition of Julia’s tremendous influence on both Smith and the world. Julia celebrated the joys of good food and good company, both of which are at the center of activities in the Campus Center. Proceeds from the sale of Julia’s home in Cambridge, donated to the college in 2002, partially funded the building; this naming, then, is an appropriate tribute to one of Smith’s best loved alums.

I hope you experience Julia’s spirit of generosity and hospitality each time you visit the Campus Center—whether to study, attend a meeting or pick up a meal.

Sincerely,

Kathleen McCartney
