Jeremy KennesonInterim Director Jeremy Kenneson began his interest in policing and security work in 1996 when he graduated with an associate degree in criminal justice. He attended the Massachusetts Reserve/Intermittent Police Academy in 1996 and the full-time Special State Police Academy in 1998. Jeremy has been part of the Smith community since September 1999 and served as an active member of the Campus Safety Advisory Group before being appointed interim director of campus safety in 2022. During his downtime, Jeremy and his wife enjoy taking care of their large array of family pets. Maybe you can ask him about those pets when you see him on campus? Steaphan MishStaff Sergeant Steaphan Mish began his interest in policing, safety and service by earning his associate degree in law enforcement in 2000. Steve joined the Department of Public Safety at Smith College in 2006, and has remained dedicated to the Smith College community ever since. Over his years of service, Steve has attended multiple trainings and learning sessions to enhance his understanding and service to the Smith College community. During his time away from work, he enjoys being with his family, tabletop gaming, attending concerts, and watching movies with family and friends. Feel free to email Steve at smish@smith.edu. |

Luke NierenhausenStaff Sergeant Sergeant Luke Nierenhausen graduated from Westfield State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2012 and began his career in law enforcement in 2014. He has been with Smith College Campus Safety since September 2021. Sergeant Nierenhausen is the department’s Defensive Tactics/Use of Force Instructor, a Field Training Officer (FTO), and enjoys being involved in community outreach events on campus. Irma Lopez-GottliebSergeant Irma Lopez-Gottlieb (she/her) started her career with Smith College in 2003 as a cook at the Davis Center. She transferred to the Smith College Campus Safety Department and became a dispatcher. With the help of the department, Irma went to the academy and became a part of the patrol staff, a RAD instructor and part of the bike patrol. She loves being a part of the Smith community. On her own time, Irma enjoys spending time with her family and their dog, being in the woods, in the water and anywhere outdoors. Feel free to email Irma at ilopez@smith.edu. |

Jamee NierenhausenSergeant Jamee Nierenhausen graduated from Westfield State University with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice in 2014. She recently earned her Graduate Leadership Certificate from Western New England University. Jamee graduated from the Special State Police Academy in 2018 and since then has become a Sexual Assault Investigator and Field Training Officer. She has been with the Smith College Campus Safety Department since October 2022. Her favorite part of working here is organizing and participating in community outreach programs. Campus Safety Staff Training 2020
In the interests of transparency, this section provides information on trainings our staff have attended and completed. The Campus Safety Department will continue to constantly train and learn as we strive to serve the community with the utmost integrity, respect, and care. Please return to this section often as it will be updated with new announcements of training that Campus Safety Staff have participated in.
July/August
The Clery Act Compliance Training Academy was attended by several members of Campus Safety Command Staff to better comply with our federal reporting requirements for campus safety.
August
Over the month of August, all Campus Safety Staff participated in Anti-Bias training for Campus Safety presented by Amy Hunter and Toby Davis of the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
October
- All Campus Safety Command Staff participated in First Line Supervision Training instructed by Director of Campus Safety Debra C. Duncan.
- A Campus Safety Officer attended Basic Crime Scene Investigations training instructed by Andy Kehm.
- All Campus Safety Staff were trained in crisis recognition and response. The training, Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics (ICAT) is a use-of-force training model designed to aid officers in how to respond to and effectively manage volatile situations. It was instructed by Massachusetts State Police Lieutenant Michael Sonia.

Campus Safety Advisory Group
The purpose of the Campus Safety Advisory Group (CSAG) is to help strengthen connections between the Campus Safety department and Smith College students, staff and faculty; to solicit and provide community feedback; and to help advance the community-focused mission of the department. To further this purpose, the group will regularly consult and engage with the department, and meet at least once a semester.
