Reason #5 You Should VISIT
Unique architecture
There was a time when you didn't need to ask, but parents today want reasonable assurance that their daughters will be safe at college. Smith has an extremely safe campus, and students come and go on campus and downtown at all hours of the day and night. Smith and Northampton are not entirely crime-free, but they’re significantly safer than most medium- or large-sized cities.
Our safety consciousness makes us extremely cautious. Students are briefed on personal safety and have access to self-defense courses. Houses are always locked and have intercoms for identifying visitors. The college provides nighttime escorts and shuttle buses are available for students, emergency alarm boxes are set up throughout campus, and the college's security officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day.
The college has a campuswide emergency notification system to quickly communicate news to the entire community, and the Campus Safety Department coordinates responses to all emergency situations.
