Read the Staff Council Charter Staff Council
Since its inception in 1992 the Smith College Staff Council has provided a comprehensive communication network for the exchange of information between staff and administration, organized college-wide programs to facilitate personal and professional growth, promoted college-wide discussion of issues through public meetings and forums, and planned extracurricular activities, such as trips to New York City, cookie swaps and media exchange events. Staff Council meets monthly and works to provide all staff with an opportunity for involvement in the Smith College community.
Get Involved
Have your voice heard some place other than at the water cooler!
Staff Council members take pride in listening to one another and they know how to get the word out to all members of the college. Participating in change is empowering and constructive and communication is what Staff Council is all about. Even if you are not an elected member, you can still be an important part of Staff Council, as your input makes the Staff Council stronger and more effective.

Serve on Staff Council
We hold elections every spring and are always looking for people excited to get involved. Each Staff Council representative serves a two-year term and, each year, approximately half of the Council stands for election.
College release time is guaranteed for elected Staff Council members so they can take part in monthly and special meetings.
Join a Committee
We welcome all staff! You do not have to be an elected Staff Council member to participate on a committee that addresses something you care about.
Attend a Meeting
Come to a Staff Council meeting. Full Council and Committee meetings are open to all staff. See first-hand what we do and how we do it. Scheduled meetings are listed on the Committees page.
Participate in an Event
Consider participating in one of the many events held by the Staff Council! Current events include the upcoming Staff Council Cider and Donuts which will be on Lilly Lawn from 9–11 a.m. on October 24.
Introducing Smith’s 12th President
On September 15, 2022, the board of trustees introduced Sarah Willie-LeBreton as the college’s 12th president. Willie-LeBreton will take office on July 1, 2023.

With recommendations from our Toward Racial Justice at Smith plan, Smith College continues its commitment to transparency, to inclusivity and to racial justice at Smith. Informed by student, staff and faculty voices to Inclusion in Action work, as well as student and alumnae/i demands, discussions with the Inclusion Council and Presidents’ Cabinet, the college commits to action.
