Leaves

The college supports faculty sabbatical leaves and leaves of absence without pay, as well as employee leaves.

Sabbatical Leaves & Leaves of Absence Without Pay

Sabbatical leaves and leaves of absence without pay are administered and approved by the office of the provost/dean of the faculty. Requests for 2025-26 sabbaticals and leaves without pay are due October 15, 2023.

Employee Leaves

Medical leaves, parental leaves, family leaves, and other types of leaves, as well as disability accommodations, are administered and approved by the office of human resources. The Employee Handbook details the policies and processes for employee leaves, and forms for requesting these leaves are available on the office of human resource’s website

Paid Parental Leave Benefits for Faculty

The following provisions supplement the parental leave eligibility and benefit information in the Employee Handbook.

Primary Caregiver
A faculty member who takes primary responsibility for the care of a newborn or newly adopted child will normally be excused from teaching, research, and administration for a single semester, which must be taken within the 12 months following the birth or adoption of the child.

Non-Primary Caregiver
A faculty member who is not the primary caregiver of a newborn or newly adopted child is eligible for one of the following benefits.

  • Option 1: The faculty member will be excused from teaching one course during the semester in which a child arrives or during the semester after a child arrives, while remaining responsible for continuing research and administrative duties for the semester. Additionally, for the week after the child arrives, the faculty member will be excused from all teaching, research, and administration.
  • Option 2: The faculty member will receive up to four weeks of paid parental leave at the faculty member’s normal weekly rate of pay (although the faculty member may be eligible for additional paid leave under MA PFML).
