Break Housing & Storage

Smith has four breaks throughout the year (Thanksgiving, winter, spring and summer) where you must apply to remain on campus. It is important that you know the dates when houses close before breaks and open after breaks. You will not be permitted to stay in a house after the designated closing date and time nor to move back into a house before the designated date and time.

Students who wish to stay on campus for vacation must complete a break housing request form. Forms and applications required for break housing will be made available on your Residence Life Self-Service page. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact the Office of Residence Life

The form is a contractual agreement between the permanent residents of the room and the vacation occupant. This is to ensure that all involved parties are in agreement with the conditions of occupying the room during break.

Front door OneCard access will change on all houses for breaks. OneCard house access turns off at 10 a.m. on the day the break starts, and OneCard house access will turn on at 1 p.m. the day the break ends. If you have completed a Thanksgiving or Spring Break Housing request and have been approved to stay, you will have access to the house you are staying in during the break.

Available Housing

Fall Break

All houses are open for fall break. You do not need to apply to stay in housing during fall break.

Thanksgiving Break

All houses will remain open for Thanksgiving break. Students must complete the Thanksgiving break housing form to gain appropriate OneCard access to remain during Thanksgiving break. Students who do not sign up for Thanksgiving break will have their OneCards deactivated.

Winter Break

All houses, including Friedman Apartments, will close for a 10-14 day period between late December and early January except for Ada Comstock Houses and Graduate housing. Winter break housing is only available to you if your permanent address is an address outside of the United States. International students can find more information on the Office of International Students and Scholars website.

Spring Break

Anyone who wishes to remain on campus for the spring break must complete the spring break housing form. The OneCards of anyone not signed up to remain on campus will be deactivated. The spring break form will open in mid-February and close in early March and can be found on your Res Life Self-Service page. Dining fees were eliminated in spring 2019. Please see the spring break dining hours and locations on the dining website.

All houses remain open during spring break, except Tyler House. Please open up the break housing grid (above) to confirm which houses will be open for spring break. If your house is not open and you need to stay during the break, you will need to make arrangements with friends or other students in those houses that will be open, so you can stay in their rooms and obtain their keys.

Fees

Housing Cost

Effective Spring 2019, all fees associated with Thanksgiving and Spring Break periods have been eliminated. There are no fees for students who remain on campus during Thanksgiving and/or Spring Break. Students are still required to sign up in advance for housing during these break periods.

Break Keys

OneCards will be used to access the front door. You are responsible for keys borrowed for break. Lost break keys result in the usual key charges of $110 ($50 for a core replacement, $30 for a replacement key, $30 for a replacement tag key). Don't forget that if you lose the key for a double room, you also have to pay the cost of the roommate's replacement key (an additional $30, for a total of $140).

Storage

Smith College provides limited storage (trunk room storage) for you during the summer break. We strongly encourage you to use off-campus storage options due to the limited space available in the trunk rooms. Students who reside on campus during the summer have access to limited temporary storage in the basement of John M. Greene Hall.
